Are you looking for a skilled orthodontist who can help your teen create a straighter smile? Have you waited until your adult years to look for help correcting your misaligned teeth? At Breckinridge Dental & Orthodontics, we’re happy to serve patients in both categories. While braces are most often associated with teenagers, more and more adults are seeking help with braces. And with advances in the field of orthodontia, it’s easier than ever before to provide more discreet care with traditional braces.
If your child sees Dr. Christine Coughlin for routine exams, we can watch your little one’s smile develop and recommend early care if necessary. Our goal is to nip any serious developmental issues in the bud as early as possible, to prevent the need for more advanced orthodontic care later on.
That said, some young patients will still need braces once permanent teeth erupt. Board certified orthodontist Dr. Nathan Coughlin works closely with you and your child on a comprehensive treatment plan leading to the straight, beautiful smile they deserve.
According to some estimates, one in five orthodontic patients is an adult. Mature patients often seek care for cosmetic reasons, but that’s not the only reason to straighten smiles. Misaligned teeth give bacteria, plaque, and tartar extra places to hide increasing risk for tooth decay and gum disease. What’s more, misaligned teeth contribute to neuromuscular conditions like teeth grinding and TMJ dysfunction. Symptoms of these problems include headaches, earaches, dizziness, and neck pain. Correcting your bite alleviates symptoms and prevents serious wear to your teeth or strained temporomandibular joints.
Regardless of what we recommend, our Richardson team always takes the time to answer your questions. We want you to not only have a full understanding of your options, but to understand how those options lead to a healthier and more beautiful smile.

LEARN MORE ABOUT CARING FOR TRADITIONAL BRACES
Are you considering getting traditional braces in Richardson? Going through orthodontic treatment is a big transition, which is why it’s important to know what to expect before you commit to the process. For your convenience, we’ve answered some common questions we receive from our patients below.
Orthodontic issues such as bite problems affect a variety of people of all different ages, which is why there’s no age limit to get braces. However, it’s always a great idea to fix these issues while you’re younger to reduce your risk of developing oral health problems down the road because of them. That’s why many children and young adults between the ages of 12 and 16 are recommended to get them. Once all of your child’s adult teeth have grown in, it’s a good idea to have their mouth examined by an experienced orthodontist.
Some patients are hesitant to commit to braces because they believe that the only benefit they offer is an aesthetic one. However, that’s not the case at all! By fixing crowded and crooked teeth and bite problems, you’ll be making it easier to brush and floss your teeth as well as prevent medical conditions such as TMD from developing. This will reduce your risk of developing oral health problems that could permanently damage your smile down the road.
If you’re considering getting braces for your child or teen, it’s important to let them know that they’re a responsibility, and cleaning their mouth and braces regularly is absolutely necessary in order for them to avoid developing oral health problems during their treatment. Every day, your child will need to brush twice for at least two minutes, floss at least once, and regularly rinse with antibacterial mouthwash. They’ll also need to be mindful of the foods that they eat, because sticky and chewy snacks can cause them to damage or break a bracket or wire.
With regular checkup and adjustment appointments every six to eight weeks, we’ll be able to let you know if your child is keeping up with their braces and they’re making progress. Plus, if you have any questions or concerns, you’ll have a chance to ask our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Nathan Coughlin!
The coverage of your dental insurance depends on what type of plan you have and where you live. In certain states, dental insurance providers cover the cost of traditional braces. However, it can vary depending on your unique situation and coverage. If you’d like to learn more about the cost of braces, you can always contact our office. We also offer additional payment options and financing plans to make the process as easy and affordable as possible!
